Ng Teng Fong General Hospital has a large Operating Theatre (OT), with 18 Operating Rooms (OR). The urgent nature of the work in OT demands quick and efficient communication, lapse in communication could result in sever consequences.

Partially funded by The Ministry of Health, 50 pieces of hands free communication badges were deployed to support the Emergency OTs and elective Eye OT. The device functions by voice commands and allows users to make calls by speaking the name or role of the person to be contacted, eliminating the need to remember or search for phone numbers. One to many broadcasting, user defined call groups and call flows enables better coordination of work.

As the project manager, I over saw the implementation of the system, and designed the pilot study to quantify productivity gain and ROI. The most significant improvement comes from the reduced frequency at which nurses need to physically search the OT complex to locate individuals, this translates to an annual cost avoidance of $137K per year.
