"Serious Game" for Nursing Education
Quality Detective began as a mock clinical exercise, where staff were brought into a mock clinical environment, and tasked spot clinical and safety mistakes within a given amount if time. The exercise aims to improve staff awareness to clinical quality and safety. However physical mock ups are limited by a physical set up, restricting the reach of the initiative.
Taking inspiration from the rising trend of "serious games", I managed to convince JurongHealth management to develop Quality Detective as a mobile and PC application. Quality Detective was launched in Oct 2013, allowing more staff to be engaged in a shorter time.

Nursing Department saw the potential for the application to be used for Nursing education. Together with a team from Nursing Training and Development, we applied for and received funding from the Ministry of Health to develop Quality Detective into Jurong Health Virtual Nurse, Singapore's first mobile application for nursing education.
Virtual Nurse was developed as productivity pilot project in 2015. Compared to Nursing In-Service Training, Virtual Nurse was able to engage 4 times more staff per module, and able to deliver the same amount of content using less time. Pre and post test were conducted to ensure that the application was effective in delivering nursing education content.

Virtual Nurse saved a total of 185 training contact hours over a period of 12 months and allowed clinical instructors to be redeployed for more advanced hands-on training and guidance. We are happy to share that Virtual Nurse managed to win multiple poster awards and recognition from ministry and media.
