Hand Hygiene Device Prototype
Ensuring good hand hygiene practice is widely accepted as a cornerstone for prevention of hospital acquired diseases. This project was Jurong Health's first prototyping project.

Prototype Design Process:

With the understanding of the 5 moments of hand hygiene, user research was first conducted to understand what are the common areas where healthcare workers would frequently be in contact with without sanitising their hands.

Due to the frequency healthcare worker's need to access the Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Computer on Wheels (COW) has as become a medium for the spread of nosocomial infections.

The objective of the Proof of Concept (POC) pilot was to develop and test the feasibility of integrating a hand rub dispenser with a COW, such that users must sanitise their hands before they can access and use the COW.

Four working prototypes were made and tested in Alexandra Hospital. Swabs for bacterial culture test were taken once everyday for a period of two weeks. Comparing the bacterial culture between the experiment and control samples, a trend towards significance was observed. The results were shared at the Medical Board Meeting, granting the project team approval to proceed with a Proof of Value (POV) pilot.
